Day Fire Information Resource Ojai Valley, CA3 comments
25 Sep 2006 @ 01:44
I live in Ojai, CA where the Day Fire has been burning the wilderness for a couple of weeks now. One of our local community, Tyler Suchman, who started the Ojai Post has been instrumental in deciminating information about the fire's status.

Here is the latest report and make sure to visit Ojai Post for current, up to date information.

Ojai Fire Watch: Day Fire - 9/24 Sunday Thread

DAY FIRE RESOURCE PAGE

[[Update: 6:26pm] Weather - NWS / Ojai (5:59 report)
Fire Weather Warning - Red Flag Warning Is Cancelled...The National Weather Service in Los Angeles / Oxnard has cancelled the red flag warnings.

[As of: 5:12pm] VC Sheriff's Dept (12:40pm report)
All precautionary and recommended evacuations are still in effect. All road closures are still in effect for non-residents. All four evacuation shelters are still open and available to evacuees. Pine Mountain Club is no longer available for animal sheltering/evacuation. At 12:30 p.m., a DC-10 dropped 12,000 gallons of fire retardant on the Nordoff Ridge (this was the first useage of this plane in an ACTUAL fire), over an area that is 3/8 to 3/4 of a mile wide. 127,500 acres have been affected by the Day Fire, which is 40% contained at this time. Currently there are over 3,200 fire personnel, and over 45 aircraft (32 helicopters, 8 air tankers, 4 air attack craft, 1 DC-10) battling the fire. [ed.note: two days ago we had a report that the DC-10 was not being used because of bureaucratic red tape. Looks like the paperwork got done.]
[Update: 2:58pm] KVTA.com has some interesting new info on the DC-10 Jumbo Jet.
[Update: 4:01pm] blogger Mark Storer reports that the DC-10 was previously used to effectively fight a July Yucca Valley fire.
[Update: 4:04pm] a 3:55pm VCSD update announces the Santa Paula Meeting, already covered below.
[Update: 5:12pm] a 5:00pm VCSD update announces: "Sheriff's Officials have been in contact with Ojai Unified School District officials. Assessments are currently being made about the possibility of school closures for tomorrow (09/25/06). We will post the decision here as soon as it is confirmed."

[No Change In Status: 4:58pm] VC Fire Dept (10:35am report)
Fire Engine Strike Teams are currently on-scene for structure protection in the Upper Ojai area. Reports have been received of visible flames to the east. There is a Recommended Evacuation along highway 150 from Upper Ojai - Sulphur Mountain Rd. area to Steckel Park area. Fire is currently being seen at the top of Topa Topa Bluffs and adjacent mountain areas but has not gone over. It is firmly established in the head of the Santa Paula Creek and is working its way downslope toward the mouth of the creek. Erratic winds may cause unpredictable fire behavior. Fire personnel are on-scene. (read more at the VCFD page... [in Spanish])

[No Change In Status: 4:58pm] Forest Service / Inciweb.org: (8:42am report)
Size: 127,569 acres, Containment: 40 percent, Cost: $33,685,016, Line to Build: 59 miles. Weather Conditions: Red Flag warning in effect through 6 pm tonight, for strong offshore winds and low humidity. Full report after the jump...

[Update: 6:39pm] OUSD (5:45pm report)
"The fire department has made excellent progress in pushing the Day Fire off of the Topa Topa ridge today. As of this afternoon, the fire appears to be moving away from Upper Ojai. The fire department has downgraded the evacuation to "precautionary" (6 hours notice) instead of the "recommended" (3 hours notice) that had been in place for Upper Ojai. Highway 150 will remain closed tomorrow. Because the fire department is anticipating heavy fire vehicle traffic on Highway 150, they have requested that we close Summit School and ask parents to stay off of the road as much as possible. This will allow our fire fighters to do their job much more efficiently. Summit School will be open on Tuesday, September 26 unless the fire situation changes. So to summarize, although the danger has lessened, we are closing Summit School to assist in reducing traffic on Highway 150 tomorrow. Stay home and read a good book! All other bus routes for high school and junior high students in the Upper Ojai are expected to be running tomorrow."

[New: 1:52pm] Santa Paula Community Meeting on the Day Fire
When: Monday, September 25, at 6:30 p.m.
Where: Santa Paula Community Center, 530 West Main Street, Santa Paula Fire and law enforcement officials will update residents on the status and strategies for containment of the Day Fire. For further information contact: Ventura Co. Fire Info. Center at (805) 388-4276 Los Padres NF Fire Info. Center at (805) 961-5770

News Story 10:03am
AP: Firefighters Face Hot, Dry Winds
One of the "spot" blazes burned about 7,000 acres in the canyons above Thomas Aquinas College in Santa Paula along Highway 150, about 75 miles north of Los Angeles. The campus was evacuated late Saturday. Plumes of reddish smoke were visible as students raced between dorms gathering books and clothing. Charlie Kaiser, 20, walked to his car carrying a surfboard wrapped in a blanket and several books. "If we get Monday off, I want to go surfing," Kaiser said.

Recent Photo: 10:10am
photo courtesy of Ginny in Upper Ojai who writes: The smoke is blowing toward Dennison, so you folks in Ojai should start seeing action soon

Oil Fields
Reader Kira asks: Where are the Sespe oil fields in relation to Ojai? How close is the fire to them? What do the officials expect if the fire reaches the oil fields? Could we see uncontrollable fire burning for long periods of time? [Update: 3:09pm] reader mk answers: the Sespe Oil Fields are just north of Filmore. They burned over during the Piru Fire a couple years ago. They might be shut down, but I wouldn't expect long term oil fires.

[Update: 4:12pm] Vacuum: Still no mention of the Day Fire, no resource links, nothing from our elected officials: Elton Gallegly, Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein, Audra Strickland, nor the City of Ojai(!)

Thank you to the Ojai community for passing the word around and contributing in the comments and via email. Additional updates and questions should be directed to: tyler -at- ojaipost dot com. Shout out to our hosting provider, Digital Housing, which is doing a great job keeping this site humming under an increasingly heavy load.

And a big tip of our community hat to the 3,200 men and women who are working incredibly hard to save our local towns. Their efforts are invaluable, and we owe them our deep gratitude. If you see fire workers, officials and other personnel around Ojai, take a moment to let them know that they are doing a great job (unless they are lugging a hose through your backyard - just let them do their thing).

India Stopping Theft of Ancient Knowledge

[link]
By Gavin Rabinowitz
The Associated Press

Saturday 24 December 2005

Protection: The nation is building a database of indigenous knowledge to keep entrepreneurs from making a profit from it.

New Delhi - For thousands of years Indian villagers have used an extract from seeds of the neem tree as an insecticide. So when a US company patented a process for producing the substance in 1994, India reacted with outrage.

After spending millions of dollars in legal fees to successfully overturn the patent, India's government now is creating a 30-million-page database of traditional knowledge to fend off entrepreneurs trying to patent the country's ancient lore.

India is not alone in worrying about "bio-prospectors" profiting from the genetic resources of its plant life with no benefit to its people. It joined China, Brazil and nine other nations a few years ago to begin pushing for international protections.

The database project already has caught the interest of others. A South African team recently visited and a Mongolian mission is coming in January, said V.K. Gupta, chairman of India's National Institute for Science Communication and Information Resources.

The database, called the Traditional Knowledge Data Library (TKDL), will make information available to patent offices around the world to ensure that traditional remedies are not presented as new discoveries.

"If societies have been using it for centuries, why should it be patented?" asked Shiv Basant, a senior official at the Health Ministry's Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, India's traditional health and medical disciplines.

The government also has successfully challenged patents on the use of the spice turmeric to heal wounds and rashes and a patent on a rice strain derived from India's famed basmati rice.

But that is a fraction of the problem. A 2003 study by Gupta's institute estimated some 7,000 patents worldwide are based on Indian indigenous knowledge, far too many for India to challenge in expensive legal fights. But officials hope the database will head off future battles.

"If we have all the data in TKDL, we will not have to spend all those millions of dollars," said Ajay Dua of the Commerce Ministry's Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion.

It is difficult for overseas patent office researchers to prove purported innovations are really based on old lore because, while the information is widely published in India, it is often in ancient languages like Sanskrit or modern regional languages like Tamil.

Gupta convened a group of 150 experts in traditional medicine, scientists, doctors, patent lawyers and computer programmers to put together the database of traditional knowledge.

Instead of laboriously translating the manuscripts, the scholars structured the texts into classifications widely used by patent examiners. The texts are then entered in the database, where specially developed software translates them into Hindi, English, German, French, Japanese and Spanish.

More than 10 million pages already have been loaded into the system and 20 million more will be available by the end of 2006, Gupta said.

Life After The Oil Crash

Civilization as we know it is coming to an end soon. This is not the wacky conclusion of a religious cult, but rather the result of diligent analysis sourced by hard data and the scientists who study global “Peak Oil” and related geo-political events.

The situation is so dire that even George W. Bush's Energy Adviser, Matthew Simmons, has acknowledged that "the situation is desperate. This is the world's biggest serious question."

News Of A New Human Nature0 comments

News Of A New Human Nature

Some of the best signs, ideas, and voices of hope for the future of humankind are gathered in NEWS OF A NEW HUMAN NATURE, the fifth book by D. Patrick Miller, author of the acclaimed Little Book of Forgiveness and The Book of Practical Faith. This provocative collection of magazine articles and interviews on alternative spirituality and human potential is drawn from the best of nearly 100 pieces Miller has written for such magazines as Yoga Journal, The Sun, Natural Health, Intuition, the Columbia Journalism Review and many others in the US and abroad. Focusing only on the most serious and enduring perspectives to arise from the so-called New Age and "cultural creative" movements, this book will remind readers why the best-selling author and philosopher Jacob Needleman calls Miller "one of the best interpreters of alternative spirituality for all those who wish to understand it, rather than laugh at it, ignore it, or swallow it whole."

68 New BBC RSS Feeds

For RSS aficionados, these feeds from a trusted source on topics including specific regions, e-commerce, higher education, technology, global politics etc.

The site says:
From Kevin Hinde at BBC News Interactive comes word that "We now have RSS feeds for all our News indexes. Sport should follow soon. We haven't quite worked out how to publicise them yet, we need to persuade our graphic designers that the orange XML lozenge is a beautiful complement for their delightful layout, so it's all a bit samizdat at the moment, but I thought you might like to know."

Rhetorica Offers Commentary On Spin Journalism0 comments
23 Jun 2003 @ 04:16
Rhetorica

"Offers analysis and commentary about the rhetoric, propaganda, and spin of journalism and politics, including analysis of presidential speeches and election campaigns. This site features the Rhetorica: Press-Politics Journal web log, Presidential Campaign Rhetoric 2004, comprehensive news media links, a primer of critical techniques, and information for voters." The discussion of how to analyze political and non-political forms of bias in news media is especially valuable.

Named for Rhetorica, the beautiful warrior. Words are her weapons, and she wins by the logic of her arguments, the passion of her emotions, the strength of her character, and the eloquence of her expressions. She represents the classic concerns of rhetoric: applying skilled public speaking and writing to the issues of the day to move hearts and minds.

Red Alert: The Re-Emergence Of The Nuclear Threat0 comments

Red Alert: The Re-Emergence Of The Nuclear Threat

World Link TV

DishTV: Channel 9410
DirectTV: Channel 375

This week WorldLink presents a weeklong investigative and documentary exploration of the history of nuclear weapons and the present dangers inherent in today's nuclear environment. Never before has such a comprehensive collection of documentaries and investigative reports on the history and scope of today's nuclear realities been shown on television. Below are the highlights of this special week of programming:

............

THE ACTIVE OPPOSITION: THE NUCLEAR LULLABY - WHAT WE ARE NOT BEING TOLD LIVE CALL-IN

Host Peter Coyote and studio guests discuss the nuclear threat in the post-Cold War age. The program will the explore the legacy of radiation and presents information which the U.S. government has not divulged on nuclear proliferation, the use of depleted uranium, and the storage hazards of nuclear waste. Also discussed are the international facets of the nuclear threat, including nuclear terrorism, the realities of a "Hindu" and "Islamic" nuclear bomb, the contamination of the environment, and the consequences of passing the unsolved burden of nuclear waste on to future generations. Call in your questions and comments to 1-866-848-0831.

............

DARK CIRCLE WORLDLINK PREMIERE

A sobering look at the full scope and human impact of the Atomic Age, from the dropping of the first nuclear bombs on Japan to the present day perils of the hydrogen bomb factories and nuclear power. This updated version of the Emmy Award-winning film weaves dramatic personal stories of nuclear victims with previously classified footage of the secret world where nuclear bombs are tested and built.

............

THE WAR GAME

A still shocking 1965 mock documentary about life in Kent, England during and after an atomic attack. The film shows firestorms, food riots, street executions, and radiation sickness. The BBC, which originally commissioned the film, refused to air it until 1985.
............

PAUL JACOBS AND THE NUCLEAR GANG WORLDLINK PREMIERE

A poignant and potent documentary that exposes the government's suppression of the health hazards of low-level radiation. Paul Jacobs, a co-founder of Mother Jones magazine, was himself a victim of lung cancer which his doctors believe he contracted while he was investigating nuclear policies in 1957. He died before this film was completed.
............

THE NUCLEAR ICEBERG

The possibility that terrorists could acquire a nuclear weapon to build a crude nuclear bomb and attack the United States is the most urgent threat to American lives and liberties today. "The Nuclear Iceberg" reveals this largely neglected and potentially catastrophic issue.

............

DARK CLOUD: OUR STRANGE LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE BOMB

Nukes as portable infantry weapons. Nukes for digging tunnels. Nuclear decontamination with a whisk broom. Secret government films of the 1940's, '50s and '60s form the backdrop for this darkly entertaining exploration of America's fascination with the Bomb. At times humorous, strange, and disturbing, these films reveal how the culture of nuclear weapons shaped American society during the Cold War and how the advocates of nuclear culture sought to make atomic weapons a part of everyday life.

............

PAKISTAN AND INDIA UNDER THE NUCLEAR SHADOW

In 1998 Indian and Pakistan became nuclear powers. This independent documentary made in Pakistan takes a critical look at the nuclear danger that now imperils the people of both countries.

 Lost Treasures From Iraq3 comments
26 Apr 2003 @ 17:05
This site is highly incomplete at this point. We will continue to add pictures over the next few weeks as we acquire them; a searchable object database is planned as a second phase for the website, to be developed over the next few weeks.

In the world of Mesopotamian archaeology, no other museum could rival the collections from the Iraq Museum. Spanning a time from before 9,000 B.C. well into to the Islamic period they included some of the earliest tools man ever made, painted polychrome ceramics from the 6th millennium B.C., a relief-decorated cult vase from Uruk, famous gold treasures from the Royal Cemetery at Ur, Sumerian votive statues from Tell Asmar, Assyrian reliefs and bull figures from Assyrian capitals of Nimrud, Nineveh, and Khorsabad, to Islamic pottery and coins--an unrivaled treasure not only for Iraq, but for all of mankind.

In the days following the conquest of Baghdad the Iraq Museum was looted. Reports on the damage vary--the number of lost or stolen objects varies between 50,000 to 200,000. Irrespective of numbers, the losses not only to the world of a archaeology but to mankind in general are tremendous .

This site contains Oriental Institute images of objects from the Iraq Museum, sorted by categories. Other images were scanned from books and are posted here with permission of the publishers:

Eva Strommenger. Fünf Jahrtausende Mesopotamien. München: Hirmer Verlag. 1962.

In addition, several institutions and individuals generously contributed pictures from their own holdings--their help is gratefully acknowledged here. It is hoped that it will be of use as a reference tool in the recovery of artifacts should they appear on the antiquities market.

Naturally, this site is highly incomplete at this point. We will continue to add pictures over the next few weeks as we acquire them; a searchable object database is planned as a second phase for the website, to be developed over the next few weeks.  More >

 Library of Halexandria12 comments
22 Apr 2003 @ 21:57
The Library of Halexandria has finally arrived in cyberspace! Yea! This labor of love (or mental aberration, whichever) of more than a couple of years is now available for your perusal and enjoyment. Check it out, discover the parts you like, tell your friends, send this announcement to your e-mail lists, add links on your website (and tell me how to add links to yours, and here on my website you'd want your link to appear), and let me know your reactions, feelings and anything else you want to share. The work is still in progress, but with 500 webpages and over 23,000 links, there should sufficient diversity to whet your appetite.

The Library of Halexandria is a synthesis of new physics, sacred mathematics, ancient and modern history, multiple universes and realities, consciousness, the ORME and Ha Qabala, extraterrestrials, corporate rule and politics, law, order and entropy, scientific anomalies, trial by jury, astronomy, monetary policy, and a whole host of other subjects ranging from astrology and astrophysics to superstrings and sonoluminesence to biblical and geologic histories to numerology, the Tarot, and creating your own reality. It is a bridging of the Age of Pisces and the Age of Aquarius.

Halexandria is in all respects a journey, a Fool s Journey. It begins from diverse locations, but always leads to a comprehension of the magnificent whole. It is, in essence, putting all of the pieces together. The website is based primarily on fact and documented evidence, but with a liberal dose of rational, logical speculation as well as several diversions into reality-based fictional treatments. In all cases, Halexandria makes the assumption -- an assumption which will be mathematically proven within the website-- that all aspects of the universe are connected and that there are no limits to what we can possess or what we can become.

A sampling of the myriad web pages includes: The Adam s Family, Age of Pisces, Ages in Chaos, Alchemy, Alice in Barium-Titanate Land, Anarchy, Annals of Earth, Anunnaki, Astrology, Bell s Theorem, David Bohm, Calvin and Hobbes, Cartels, Chaos Theory, Common Law, Consciousness, Corporate Rule, Corporate Politics, Corporate State, Creating Reality, Crop Circles, Dawn the Chosen, Days of the Week, Deluge, Epic of Creation, ESP, EPR Experiment, Executive Orders, Extraterrestrial Life, Fibonacci Numbers, The Fool s Journey, Laurence Gardner, Genesis, Gods and Goddesses, Gold Peace, The Golden Rule, Golden Mean, The Golden Tear from the Eye of Horus, Harmony of the Spheres, Health and Responsibility, Heir Apparent, Heisenberg s Uncertainty Principle, Hemp, Holograms, Hyperdimensional Physics, Illusions, Mach s Principle, Magic Squares, Mary Magdalen, Mind-Body, Money, Multiple Choice, Music, Nature of Law, Nines, Numerology, ORME, Paatah, Philanthropy, Philosophy, Pogo Possum, Precious Metals, Relativistic Variations on a Theme, Restorative Justice, Zecharia Sitchin, Secrets, Social InSecurity, Sonoluminescence, Star Fire, Sumerian, Superconductivity, Superstrings, Tarot, Transcendental Numbers, Tree of Life, Trial by Jury, Tunguska Explosion, UFOs, Immanuel Velikovsky, Victimless Crimes, White Powder of Gold, Wicca, Arthur Young, Zero-Point Energy, and The Flight of the Zygo Mati.
