" To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American
public." --Theodore Roosevelt

"My country, right or wrong" is bad enough. It's usually extended, as it is now, to condemn critics as giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Belief that failure to support our government in all its decisions will aid the enemy is based on nothing but emotionalism and ignorance of human psychology. The conduct of a war is determined by the President and the military leaders who are responsible to him, not by public opinion. The conduct of the Iraqis, or whoever happens to be the enemy at the moment, is determined by factors which have nothing to do with the opinions of outsiders. They would not be discouraged by 100% American support for the war, or encouraged by 100% opposition to it. They will fight or not fight for their own reasons.
