TARZAN'S CHEETA'S LIFE AS A RETIRED MOVIE STAR
By John Roach
National Geographic News
May 9, 2003

Many Hollywood stars retire in the oasis of Palm Springs, California where they while away their golden years splashing paint on canvases, taking leisurely strolls, playing the piano, and flipping through the pages of magazines.
Such is the life of 71-year-old Cheeta, the chimpanzee of Tarzan fame who celebrated his birthday a month ago.

"He's the world's oldest chimp and in excellent condition," said Dan Westfall, who cares for Cheeta and several other retired showbiz primates at the Cheeta Primate Foundation in Palm Springs. Cheeta's "world's oldest" title is noted in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Chimpanzees in the wild tend to live for 40 to 45 years and to the mid 50s in captivity, according to chimpanzee researchers.

Activists for the proper care and treatment of chimpanzees and other nonhuman primates applaud Cheeta's age record, but caution against celebrating the lifestyle of chimpanzees that were stars in the entertainment industry.

"Would you go to a movie if you knew the child actors had been kidnapped and been forced through abuse by their kidnappers to perform silly, demeaning acts?" asks Roger Fouts, co-director of the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

Activists say that retired entertainment chimpanzees engage in human behaviors such as watching television and reading magazines because they were deprived of a natural lifestyle and were instead trained to behave like humans, often through physical abuse.

"You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know that they are pretty dysfunctional," said Gloria Grow, co-founder of the Fauna Foundation which cares for neglected and abused animals in Quebec, Canada.

For example, Grow said that several of the chimpanzees in her foundation's care, including those that were in the entertainment industry, do not know how to have intercourse or how to look after their young.

"It is common scientific knowledge that taking mothers from babies has very serious consequences for the psychological well-being of both the mother and the infant, yet this is what happens to every trained chimpanzee," said Fouts.

The Good Life?

Abe Karajerjian, a biological anthropologist who works with Westfall in the caretaking of the animals at the Cheeta Primate Foundation, says Cheeta and his companions are provided with an environment and social structure that is more suitable to their species rather than perpetuating their human-like lifestyles and behaviors.

"We just love them and love to do things for them," he said. "They made tons of people happy, they had to endure a lot to make people happy, and we want to give back to them, provide them with friends."

Westfall, a comedian and actor, adopted Cheeta about 10 years ago from his uncle Tony Gentry, an animal trainer who worked in Hollywood and discovered Cheeta while on an animal talent scouting trip to Africa in the 1930s.

The 4 foot (1.2 meter) tall, 142 pound (53 kilogram) chimpanzee starred in 12 Tarzan movies and had his last role 36 years ago in the 1967 musical film Doctor Doolittle.

Cheeta now spends his days socializing with other apes and human caregivers. At times he seems fascinated by looking at other animals on television and in the pages of magazines like National Geographic, said Karajerjian

On a few occasions the media has spotted Cheeta taking a ride in the car with Westfall, who said that Cheeta "likes to go through the drive-thru and get a hamburger and a Coke." Cheeta's staple diet consists of fresh fruit, vegetables, and monkey chow, which is a nonhuman-primate version of dog food.

In his earlier years Cheeta had a penchant for beer and cigars, reportedly drinking several cold ones a day. Westfall and Karajerjian said booze and smoke have not been a part of the old chimp's life since he came into their care ten years ago.

"Where he lives now nobody smokes and drinks," said Karajerjian. "I hate smoking and drinking and so why would I offer it to apes?"

At the sanctuary the apes are provided with a variety of activities to stimulate their intellect and curiosity. One of the activities is painting, which Karajerjian says allows chimpanzees to mimic their innate behavior of inventing and using tools.

Westfall says that Cheeta has developed a particular talent as an abstract artist and has trademarked Cheeta's creations as "Ape-stract." Cheeta uses a paintbrush and bright colors for his creations which are full of sweeps, swirls, and straight lines.

"They are very pretty, actually," said Westfall, who sells his companion's work for $125 a piece. The proceeds go to support the Cheeta Primate Foundation, which Westfall started to raise money for unwanted showbiz animals.

Entertainment Abuse

Cheeta is a rarity among chimpanzee actors in that he was used for films into his 30s. "Most of the chimpanzees used in the entertainment industry are used when they are quite young," said Rick Bogle of the Primate Freedom Project in Santa Barbara, California. The organization works for the protection of nonhuman primates.

Chimpanzees rarely act beyond the age of ten because they become less manageable and less willing to follow directions, said Bogle. When the chimpanzees are retired, many of them are sold into biomedical research.

Gentry, Cheeta's previous owner, feared a research laboratory was Cheeta's destination so he had asked in his will that Cheeta be put to rest. Westfall talked his uncle out of having Cheeta put to rest by promising to take good care of the chimp.

Ex-entertainment chimpanzees are unfit for zoos, said Fouts, because they do not behave like regular chimpanzees. "And often times they are not socialized to other chimpanzees so they would be difficult to integrate into a social population," he said.

Westfall said primate researcher Jane Goodall inspired him to start the foundation for unwanted showbiz primates. The other chimpanzees, orangutans, and monkeys in his care have starred in television commercials, nightclubs, and theaters, but none reached the star status of Cheeta.

"There are also some from labs that we'd love to get sometime to save their lives and give them a good, healthy home to live in," he said.

All of the animals in Westfall's care interact on a daily basis and with each other and their human caregivers. Westfall's house is not open to the public, but tour buses and children often stop in front where there is a statue of Cheeta.

Living Longer

Terry Wolf, wildlife director at Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee, Florida, which cares for about 35 chimpanzees, said that captive chimpanzees that were picked up from the entertainment industry and research facilities are living longer because humans are taking better care of them.

"The quality of health care and diet in the past was traditionally not all that great," he said. Now humans have a better understanding of chimpanzee dietary, physical, and social needs, including the need for interaction to prevent the onset of deadly bouts of depression.

Little Mama, a chimpanzee who starred in a traveling ice skating show before coming to Lion Country Safari in 1967, is thought to be 65 years old and like Cheeta is in good health. She is social and gets along well with her mates, who she lives with on a series of islands in the drive-through zoo, said Wolf.

"Old age is something to be celebrated," said Virginia Landau, director of the Jane Goodall Institute's ChimpanZoo in Tucson, Arizona, which coordinates the study of chimpanzees in zoos and other captive settings.

Donations or a request for a piece of Cheeta's Ape-stract art can be sent to Westfall:

I would like to meet cheeta.I read about his birthday in the Desert Sun.Amazing that he's still with us.I'm 44 years old and never thought he'd still be alive and healthy. Happy Birthday

23 Apr 2004 @ 23:00 by Rudolph.A.Furtado @61.11.12.153 : Interaction with Dan Westfall on B.B.C.
Dan,it was wonderfull interacting with you over the radiotelephone on 23/4/2004
on B.B.C.
Cheeta(Alias jiggs) alive at 71 has proved the fact that "Circus animal and bird performers" can be managed after retirement by 'private owners'.
Martin Lessee, proprietor of'Great British circus' on his recorded tape disagreed about the upkeep of circus performers by circuses on retirement.
I have had pet dogs, one of which was a "Show quality" dachshund and at present a
"Albino oriental siameese cat" named Trixie and an "Alexandrine parakeet" mittoo.
Their "gimmicks" and "Innate intelligence" astounded me and as laboratory tests
have proved, perrots are as intelligent as apes or more, the most famous being
"Alex",the African grey.
My observation is that "Pet birds or animals" lose their "Natural Instincts and
behaviour"thus becoming more "Humanised",hence cannot be released into the
"Wild" or "Mated".
Encouraging people to keep "Wild apes or birds" should be discouraged and even banned because this will cause a gradual "EXTINCTION" of the particular species.
Parrots, are gradually being driven towards extinction due to the "PET TRADE",
and in India, trade in "Parakeets" is banned.
"Pension for pets" is a necessity until the trade in "Wild pets" is totally or gradually phased away.
Better viewing Chimpanzees and parrots in the wild or "Natural environment zoological parks" than in "Cages".
"Mittoo" my pet parakeet is definitely the last wild bird in my collection, henceforth i would only keep dogs, cats, buderigars, finches or canaries
as pets, since they can be bred in captivity and not become extinct.
"Mittoo" is 11 years old,a comedian and an excellent mimic, akin to "Cheeta",hope
"Mittoo" has a long life.
Thanks.
Yours Sincerely,
Rudolph.A.Furtado

1 Jan 2005 @ 19:05 by Jim McTarzan @81.178.124.71 : Wanted, dead or alive
He was interviewed on a TV show in the UK early in 2004 and drank and smoke heavily. He liked playing the piano and reading porn magazines and could be a bit grumpy at times. At reast until he poured himself a drink. Seriously! Oh, and he's got a bald patch but so do many 70 year old former hollywood stars.

But on new years day 2005 there was a TV show where the presenter said he *lived* into his 70s, suggesting he's now swining through the big jungle vines in the sky. It's possible they were wrong of course, and I haven't found any more references to it.

14 Feb 2005 @ 02:56 by Rudi Kiernander @65.94.201.37 : Cheeta
Wow this is really fasinating.....I read an article in The Toronto Sun about your Famous Cheeta...our article said Cheeta was 72. This of course being February of 2005 is this correct.
From reading previous notes from readers....is it at all possible to just get a recent picture of You with Cheeta through email....I would respect your privacy and not try and visit...My Wife and I were planning a trip to Monkey World in England....we have seen several of their episodes on TV and we are fasinated by the care of Monkeys and their rescue.....I sure wish you and your fabulous Team all the very best and keep up the great works you are providing for these animals.

Thanking you,

Rudi

I was so pleased to see Cheeta on the national news the other night. I'm 56 but remember him as a favourite from my teens (when the Tarzan movies were already "old" movies). Great to see him looking so stately, I'm a full-time painter myself and loved the look of his work. Congratulations on your efforts to ensure a happy and meaningful old age for him. Please keep up the good work

Interesting that Cheeta is in Palm Springs, California, while in Palm Harbor, Florida, the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary claims to be the home of Cheetah from the Tarzan movies. (www.suncoastprimates.org). Are there two retired Cheetahs? I am confused, can you please enlighten me?

16 Apr 2006 @ 14:30 by Steve Carvin @69.95.196.107 : Cheeta
I was totally amaze when I read Cheeta was celebrating his seventy-fourth birthday. I mean I was taken completely aback when I read that. I was a huge Tarzan fan as a child. Naturally, Johnny Weismuller was my favorite and I had the opportunity to meet him once. He was on a tour in The Ohio Valley of a local restaurant chain and my mother took me to see him. I had a picture taken with him alone and one of him in the crowd. Of course, I had to take the picture of just he and I to school to show off and it came up missing. But I still have the one of him in the crowd and you can tell it is Johnny Weismuller. My only regret is that Cheeta was not on tour with him. I loved Cheeta and wanted a chimp of my own because of how human he was. Of course Johnny left us a long time ago, may Cheeta remain in good health and among the living for many more years. I am still amazed.

18 Apr 2006 @ 22:44 by Laurena Hutto-Taylor @167.127.107.11 : Cheeta (of course)
As many others, I grew up loving to watch Tarzan movies on Sunday with my dad. I went to Silver Springs in Florida as a child, and just recently returned for a trip with my family. Our tour guide brought us up to date on Cheeta, and her connection to that area from the movies that were filmed there. It brought all those memories back to me. My husband and I are animal lovers as well, and we have all sorts of animals at our home in North Carolina. I too, have a pet who has a connection to movie fame. I have a horse who is a son of Cassole (the Arabian horse who played in Frances Ford Coppola's movie The Black Stallion, and The Black Stallion returns. My horses' sire passed away from colic, but having his son, in all his beauty has brought joy to me ever since I purchased him in 1988. He is well cared for and still looks and acts like he is 5.
I am sending a donation to your cause, and would love to have an "Ape Stract" painting by Cheeta to add to the many animal pictures in my home ranging from
from bears, to wolves, horses, to pigs...we are blessed with God's creatures and their beauty and we must care for them as a blessing. Thanks for the work you do.

9 Apr 2007 @ 16:39 by Gail @70.127.202.244 : Cheetah and Suncoast Primate Sanctuary
Cheetah, at the Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor, Fl, was obtained from Johnnie Weismuller's estate. In the entertainment industry, it was/is not uncommon to have multiples of the same celebrity; hence there was more than 1 Cheetah! The Suncoast Primates Sanctuary's Cheetah is also in his 70's, doing well, always swinging, and loves to "dance" with his caregivers! He too is an avid painter and if interested in a painting, just contact the sanctuary to commission a painting to be done by Cheetah. Visit www.suncoastprimates.org or call them at the phone number listed on their website.

p.s. - I also loved Tarzan movies as a small child; I can vividly remember watching his movies on a Saturday afternoon!

12 Jun 2007 @ 15:43 by Jim Wicker @71.164.198.14 : Original Cheeta?
Back in the mid 70's, my rock band " Israfel " shared a billing with a performing troup of chimpanzees that went by the name of "Sabo's chimps".
This was a small town (Gainesville,TX) and we agreed to do the show.
This fella, "Sabo " assured me that he had THE original "Cheeta". To offer proof, he showed me an 8x10 studio shot glossy of Weismueller and this chimp.
The distinguishing characteristic of this chimp was that in the studio shot the chimp had TWO NIPPLES on what I remember to be his left chest ( could have been the right, but anyway it had TWO ) as did the old, grey non performing chimp he kept tucked away in his travel trailer. Is there any chance of this being true, or was just one of probably several chimps that played the role?

I live in the St Petersburg area of Florida and I took my 2 sons to a place near Tarpon Springs, Florida I think it was called Noel's Ark. This was about 20 years ago and we saw Cheetah there. The Place was pretty run down but it was a great experience to see and hear the apes in that place. We were told that one of the chimps was Cheetah and I like the previous writer wondered if there were more than one chimp playing the part? Thanks for your time, Paul

Hi Dan, I, like a lot of other people grew up watching Tarzan movies and of course Cheeta. I live in Minnesota but would come out west if you would allow a visitor to meet Cheeta. If not I would like to at least buy several of his original paintings. I would rather spend a few minutes with Cheeta than any other hollywood star. Thanks for all your dedication to the primate cause. Any thing you could do for me to meet Cheeta or to buy his work would be deeply appreciated. Bob
