South Africa anti-rape condom aims to stop attacks

Wed Aug 31,11:46 AM ET

A South African inventor unveiled a new anti-rape female condom on Wednesday that hooks onto an attacker's penis and aims to cut one of the highest rates of sexual assault in the world.

"Nothing has ever been done to help a woman so that she does not get raped and I thought it was high time," Sonette Ehlers, 57, said of the "rapex", a device worn like a tampon that has sparked controversy in a country used to daily reports of violent crime.

Police statistics show more than 50,000 rapes are reported every year, while experts say the real figure could be four times that as they say most rapes of acquaintances or children are never reported.

Ehlers said the "rapex" hooks onto the rapist's skin, allowing the victim time to escape and helping to identify perpetrators.

"He will obviously be too pre-occupied at this stage," she told reporters in Kleinmond, a small holiday village about 100km (60 miles) east of Cape Town. "I promise you he is going to be too sore. He will go straight to hospital."

The device, made of latex and held firm by shafts of sharp barbs, can only be removed from the man through surgery which will alert hospital staff, and ultimately, the police, she said.

It also reduces the chances of a woman falling pregnant or contracting AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases from the attacker by acting in the same way as a female condom.

South Africa has more people with HIV/AIDS than any other country, with one in nine of its 45 million population infected.

Ehlers, who showed off a prototype on Wednesday, said women had tried it for comfort and it had been tested on a plastic male model but not yet on a live man. Production was planned to start next year.

But the "rapex" has raised fears amongst anti-rape activists that it could escalate violence against women.

"If a victim is wearing such a device it may enrage the attacker further and possibly result in more harm being caused," said Sam Waterhouse, advocacy co-ordinator for Rape Crisis.

Other critics say the condom is mediaeval and barbaric -- an accusation Ehlers says should be directed rather at the act of rape.

"This is not about vengeance ... but the deed, that is what I hate," she said.

I am happy that Mdm Sonette Ehlers has invented such good device. It will be glad and happy news for some women in the world are abused , ill treated by men or else.
The only way to prevent rape is to wear this Rapex device.
So, I decided to set up one factory to produce this device economically and benefit all the women as everyone can afford to buy and protect them.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Lee Hock Chai

I would be willing to wear it if I lived in the kind of places where rape was a common occurance. I would also carry weapons under my dress and be vigilant and ready to fight any would be attackers. Perhaps, in thier culture, the women are too victimized to think strongly! For those who are, the will to live conquers all. I would rather take a chance and live, hoping my attackers are not a gang, than end up raped and infected with AIDS/HIV and rejected by all and left to die a slow painful death...If you are gonna surrender to death, do it quickly. In the meantime, we need to educate the culture of women and men and hope some will begin to heal in oppressive attitudes of inequality. Send them to the USA, Papa New Guina and everywhere else in the world where men and women are still too afraid of each other to see the truth. Learning to fight to kill would be a good idea, too. Only the strong survive! I know faith can overcome anything, including AIDS/HIV. I am living proof. However, people must be taught faith through Love. Most people reject any message of power that pertains to God. Therefore, they are ignorant of thier own diety as well. In the meantime, its got to be every woman for herself unless she gets someone greater on her side!

11 Jan 2006 @ 03:29 by Thomas @69.161.97.125 : Testing
Ma'am, I am a 17 year old male from the U.S. As strange as this would sound, I would be willing to be a test subject for this in several years, provided one has not been found. My reasoning for this being that as a man with a deep respect for a female's honor and I despise the thought of rape and the men who commit it. If you are still needing a particapent please notify me.

I pray your work fallows through,
with hope,

3 Feb 2006 @ 05:27 by Jess @137.123.177.197 : THANK YOU
I just wanted to say thankyou for this device...while with anything there are concerns (I've seen the critics views and thoughts) I think its about high time women take power back into their hands, and this just might be the device to do it. It prevents disease and pregnancy so I would assume. It will help to identify him as well. While yes a woman should be educated about being safe anyway this device might still help aid her. The act of rape isnt being "accepted" its being fought against finally, its giving woman power back, I mean WHAT has been done effectively before???? No one else has come up with any ideas, this is just a step on stopping rape...how can just a little bit extra towards a woman being protected be a bad thing?? (that is unless it was found defective or something, but the idea is still a BRILLIANT one). BLESSINGS to you for making this product. I'm a young woman and I have never felt the little bit of saftey like I have with just the thought of this being put into production. Its just that little bit extra society can do. Of course we should all still go on trying to stop the act itself, but possibly now woman wouldnt have to have diseases and pregnancy be another thing added onto the effects of a rape. I know for that protection I would be willing to wear one every day. And to Thomas, BRAVO TO YOU!!!! You are definately the type of man we need more of, ones with respect for women (and one willing to feel pain for them....blessings to you as well).

Has anyone considered adding a anti-HIV and anti-testicle enzyme to the condoms to reduce the risk of HIV and pregnancy.

28 Mar 2006 @ 18:29 by Stacey @70.77.101.142 : relieved
It is such an amazing revelation that you have succeded in taking the steps to stopping not only the rape but unwanted pregnancies, and the spread of Aids/Hiv. Not enough has been done to stop rapists and this is a giant step. I give you credit where credit is due, you are an amazing woman for coming up with such a device. I understand and support all steps that need to be taken to stop this horrible act on woman and I for one would be more than willing to wear one everyday. If there are consequences for these men out there raping woman I feel the number of rapes would drop dramatically. So keep up the excellent work and don't ever forget the you will be supported by many many woman out there for you stupendous work. Thank You

16 Jul 2006 @ 16:26 by Dan @213.107.224.18 : I dont understand you people...
You mostly go on about preventing pregnancy and STI/STD's .... why not wear a female condom? they do exist... and someone will be sued, this wont be seen as "reasonable force" for protection, if the bloke gets done for rape (good :)) but the women wld also get done for assault or GBH.

What about anal rape?
And if this is succesful, the glory will be short lived. attackers will simply insert a finger to feel for it before going about their business.

Atleast add the existing technology of the anti-STD and sperm condoms to this little device. That way it'll be more than something to hurt an assailant and possibly anger him enough to beat the crap out of you. Instead it'll actually have a chance of stopping some problems.

The fundamental idea isn't bad. it just hasn't been thought through for 5 seconds. Will this potentially tear open wounds in the penis? Sounds like a great way for AIDS-ridden blood to leak into the vagina.

19 Apr 2007 @ 22:37 by Lee Pham @65.93.38.58 : well,
It is a gruesome looking device but without a doubt this contracption would in the end only help. Besides, if this idea is a little too much, I think it will open doors that will prompt people to create other ways that could prevent rapes. Especially since I know as a women myself, I never thought that I could protect myself without having to resort to carrying a weapon or even learning skills that could protect me.

as well, i think that in the case of an attack, i wouldnt even have my wits about to use said skills or weapons. the rapex would be protection that i wouldnt have to think of

29 Apr 2008 @ 16:02 by Jenny Jones @216.68.119.106 : Bad Idea.
first, you aren't protected from anal rape.

second, If the rapist knows what has happened instantly, they will probably kill the woman by beating her to death (if the victim is a woman).

third, If the victims are children, they won't have this thing inserted into them all the time rendering it useless.

fourth, I know a lot of sick women out there who would definitely trick a guy into sex only to cry rape later to get back at him for something. Yes, women can be disgustingly sadistic sometimes.

fifth, this is sexual mutilation from what I have read and that doesn't rest well with me. What if a girl has one in and forgets (as many women forget about having tampons in, taking the pill etc.) and goes home to do her boyfriend and he gets all cut up and has to get surgery on his penis?

sixth, there are plenty of self defense weapons that women could carry and use so I don't see a need for something this weird. If a woman won't carry a gun into a dangerous area, she ought not to go to that area. There are knives, guns, mace, stun-guns, high pitch alarms etc.

seventh, the reason AIDS is so high in Africa has less to do with rape and more to do with the corruption of governments. The governments allow poverty and rape to occur. Create a device to employ a better government.

eighth, If Aids is the main concern for being raped, a female condom being worn alone should take care of that problem, of course, that doesn't stop the anal rape which is far more likely to result in being infected with AIDS.

ninth, This is the most important factor: if this becomes widely used and well known, rapists will check for the device first, probably with a broomstick or leather gloves. If found, the victim will probably be killed after the rape for having it inserted. Possibly rapes will then start with a painful object doing damage to the vagina before being raped by the men.

tenth, Unless it is worn all the time, it will be far less likely that it will work and I wouldn't want to wear a plastic thing in my hoo-haa all the time. Also is it painful to wear?

eleventh, Is it safe for the person wearing it? How is it manufactured and could it come apart and get stuck inside the woman? If so, the woman would have to have surgery and that might be worse than a rape. I have had many condoms break on me.

twelvth, A rapist could potentially say you were willing and sue for pain and suffering. This also means he would be back out on the street and could get revenge on you and your family and keep raping others.

thirteenth, this doesn't protect men from anal rape and especially doesn't protect men or women in prison that get raped everyday. Prison rape is far more rampant in the US than rape on civilians per capita.

i know for definiete at least 70% of the women i know would malicously use this for sure, seriously injuring the man, as the inventor said, sending him to hospital, this device was created for offense not defense it was created to maime and seriously injure a man, and many rapes are committed against men as well, although they are obviously ashamed to admit, as much as 1/15 of all female - male rapes are unreported sadly. i dont like rape, but i dislike even more items created to seriously harm, this is as immature as kicking a man in the groin, and im glad there right now creating an anti-weapon for this, a man is 'lawfully' allowed to wear a band around his penis with spikes around it, which could be used harmfully, just as this could! anyway if my son was affected by one of these 'deadly devices' as described by more than 10 feminist writers i would be horrified and kill someone while im at it :P this device truly is worse than stabbing a child.

What's wrong with the women who post here. Stand up for yourself and through off the hijabs that keep you slaves! Protect yourselves and stop being victims. You are all brainwashed by your religion and cultures. Wake up from your trance!
Take responsibility for your lives, now.
